June 2023 PA Newsletter

Newsletter June 10th, 2023 (issue 19)

Dear MS51 Parents and Guardians,

As we approach the end of the 2022/2023 school year, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the successful events and accomplishments that have taken place within our school community. Your involvement and support have been vital in making these endeavors possible, and we are grateful for your continued dedication.

Firstly, we would like to extend our congratulations to the newly elected executive board members for the 2023/2024 school year. Your commitment to serving the needs of our students and families is truly commendable. While we celebrate this achievement, we would also like to highlight that there are still open positions that need to be filled. We encourage all interested parents and guardians to consider volunteering and contribute their skills and ideas to further enhance our school community. For more information and to express your interest, please visit Open PA and SLT Positions.

Another notable recent success has been the outstanding vocal performance led by Mr. Hillinck and our talented students. Their dedication and hard work were evident in the remarkable showcase they put on for us all. The songs were beautifully sung, and the enthusiasm displayed by the performers was contagious. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Hillinck for his guidance and to all the students who participated. Your musical talents brought joy and inspiration to our community.

Additionally, we are thrilled to report that the end-of-year SLT meeting was a resounding success. This gathering allowed teachers, administrators, and parents to come together, share ideas, and collaboratively set goals and plans for the upcoming school year. We value these opportunities for open dialogue and are grateful for the active engagement of all participants. By working together, we can ensure that MS51 continues to provide a supportive and enriching environment for our students.

Unfortunately, we must address the disappointment surrounding the postponement of the 8th-grade trip to Six Flags due to inclement weather conditions. The new date has been rescheduled for June 26th, and we appreciate your understanding and flexibility. We assure you that the safety and enjoyment of our students remain our utmost priority, and we are working diligently to make this trip a memorable experience for everyone involved.

On a more positive note, we are excited to remind you of several upcoming events that are sure to be highlights of the end of the school year. The drama performances of "Peter and the Starcatcher" will take place from June 13th to June 16th (Drama Ticket Link). We encourage you to attend and support our talented performers. Furthermore, mark your calendars for the senior awards night on June 12th, the senior dance on June 20th, followed by the senior graduation ceremony on June 22nd. These milestones are significant moments in our students' lives, and we applaud their achievements.

Lastly, we want to remind you that the last day of school is fast approaching on June 27th. It's a bittersweet moment as we bid farewell to another memorable year. However, the Parents Association will not rest during the summer break. We will continue working diligently to prepare the community for a successful new school year, which will commence on September 7th, 2023. We will keep you informed of any updates, important dates, and opportunities for involvement through our newsletters and communications.

Thank you for your ongoing support and engagement throughout the school year. Together, we have achieved great things, and we look forward to continuing this journey of excellence and growth in the years to come.

Warm regards,

As always, the Parent Association is here to support our school and community. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at middleschool51pa@gmail.com

MS51 Changes for the 2023/2024 School Year

We are pleased to inform you about the successful end of the year PA meeting that took place via Zoom, where Principal Chan shared valuable insights about the upcoming changes and initiatives for the 2023/2024 school year at MS51. During the meeting, Principal Chan discussed various topics, including the implementation of core curriculum, the execution of flex programming for 7th and 8th graders, the nurturing of talents with minors and majors, and the potential 5-year vision of transforming our school into an International Baccalaureate (IB) middle school. We highly encourage you to review the slides that Principal Chan presented (Principal Chan Presentation), as they provide a comprehensive overview of these exciting developments. We are grateful to Principal Chan, the assistant principals, and teachers for their dedication to enhancing our students' educational experience and for their commitment to keeping our community informed and involved. If you have questions about the upcoming changes, please reach out to the administration and guidance counselors (MS51 Contacts).   Check out theMS51 Online Shop

MS51’s PA has designed an online shop where parents, students, teachers, and administration can purchase MS51 event tickets and MS51 merchandise.  All of the merchandise is available for purchase and shipped directly to your home.  All of the proceeds will go to support MS51.

So many ways to support MS51 PA!

Thank you, thank you, and thank you to many of you who have already generously donated.

We are still around $3,000 short of our annual appeal goal.  To help us reach our goal and ensure that teachers, students, and staff have what they need to run the school – our donations fund everything from lab, learning software, sport team fees, and instrumental repairs. It is even more important now than ever, given the significant budget cuts to public schools with the size like ours.
